No link. someone translated the article from swedish...

Princess Madeleine: 'The trip with mother became the start of my new life'

Her days are filled with studies and work for Queen Silvia's foundation World Childhood Foundation. But in a break, Året Runt's reporter Johanne Ländin got time for a long conversation with Princess Madeleine at the Royal Palace.

During her internship year at the World Childhood Foundation, Princess Madeleine has been able to travel around to several countries and meet many children who are in difficult situations.
- In Childhood we work with the most exposed children: street children, children at institutions and sexually abused children. They are a difficult target group but one that one can do a lot for, she tells.

Princess Madeleine comes straight from work and receives us in a visitor's room at the palace. The room is beautifully decorated in red and gold with antique furniture and a hand-woven carpet. In a corner stands a grand floor clock which is reeled up every second week by a man whose job is to do the same with all of the palace's clocks. And since the floor clock just strikes four, the Princess is not only in time but also on the spot a little while before the agreed time. Unless the old clock has begun to sag since Gustav III's days…

Well used to it she poses for the photographer that she knows well since before. She usually comes out well on pictures but the question is if she isn't even prettier in real life with her awaken eyes and warm radiance.

When the photographing is over she pours up a couple of glasses with water and puts forward on the table. She has not given many interviews before and now she has the Royal Court's information director Nina Eldh with her as company and support. The Princess has a hectic spring behind her and has just finished the last exam for the term. The course that she is thereby finished with is called "Children's rights in family and society", a freestanding five-point course on Master level at Stockholm University.

Last autumn the Princess read a course in organization and leadership and now this autumn there will be a course in children's psychology.
- So I'll keep studying in my own pace. Mother calls me little squirrel because I collect points, she says and laughs.

Parallel with the studies the Princess has this past year interned and worked for World Childhood Foundation, a foundation started on the initiative of Queen Silvia eight years ago. Madeleine's own involvement seriously awakened when she travelled with Childhood together with the Queen on a two-week trip to Brazil two years ago.
- After that trip I felt that this is what I really want to do. But it has probably been within me all the time, ever since mum came home from travels around the world and told us about different children's destinies – but also about the positive effects the help signifies, she says.

During the year the Princess herself has been out on several trips and visited Childhood's projects in Ukraine, Estonia and China, among countries.
- When one comes home one is completely beat and not just because one has been out travelling. There are so many impressions, a lot of feelings. But I also get more energy from seeing all the positive effects of what we do.

- And in the office at home in Stockholm, no day is like the other, the Princess says.

- I spend a lot of time following up the different projects and that means many meetings with different organizations.

- After having interned for a year I have now been given more responsibility. I have become handling officer for a few own projects and one of them "Half the Sky", is a result of our China trip. "Half the Sky" works with making it better for children, most often abandoned girls, who live in orphanages in China. Among things one tries to find foster families that the children can grow up with instead.

Princess Madeleine has also started "The Young Group" within World Childhood Foundation.
- I felt that I wanted to engage others in my generation because it's important that also we take responsibility and carry on our parent's tradition. The group of youth is foremost the children to those who founded World Childhood Foundation and the foundation's board members. We have had a first meeting here in Stockholm and it was great to see that there was a great engagement and interest in helping and developing Childhood with many of them too.

And she herself, the Princess feels that it's fun to via work being able to ease things for mother the Queen.
- I know that a large part of her heart lies with Childhood, but she has so many other commitments as well.

Since the Princess started working with the foundation, she and the Queen have gotten more frequent contact through their joint interest.
- There are many discussions about Childhood at home – and I don't know how happy the rest of the family is about that. But mother and I actually talk more often now that we share an interest and engagement. My parents always have such a packed program that it can be difficult for me to call mother in a way that others can do.

But even if it's the Queen that has inspired the Princess in her selection of work, the engagement and interest for children in need comes from herself.
- Yes it does, absolutely. It's both giving and stimulating to do something to help others and it feels very right when I'm at my workplace. My dream is to continue the work, but I take it step by step.

She explains that her parents have always encouraged her and the siblings to do what they themselves want to do.
- And that's something that we really appreciate.

The Princess also thinks that she's lucky to be Princess in Sweden.
- Swedes are discreet and most of the time I get to be left alone – which I appreciate enormously! I feel that I can be relatively private, but even so I never get away from being a public person. I am always watched and I can never be completely private.

But she thinks that she can move around quite freely in the city and to study at Stockholm University has never been a problem either.

An oasis where the Royal Family have previously been undisturbed is Solliden on Öland, she tells.
- But now more and more photographers have turned up in the last years. And that gives me a feeling of being trapped. So Solliden isn't the same private place that it was before – at least not for me, Princess Madeleine says.

- Maybe now it's in Storlien, where we have a mountain cottage, where I can be the most private.

The family tried to arrange Sunday dinners as often as possible now that the children are adults and have moved away from home.
- But my parents are as I said very busy and my sister also gets more and more busy, the Princess says.

When Princess Madeleine has free time she spends a lot of time with her friends – just like other young people, she says.
- And now I have a dog and I love to take walks with my dog.

Her old interest for horses will also always remain.
- But horses take a lot of one's time and I don't ride very much anymore. But I will definitely take up riding again later.

The question is she enjoys cooking makes Princess Madeleine burst out in a cheerful laughter.
- Cooking is perhaps not something I have really grabbed! Most often I do something easy.

She does like reading though.
- I gladly read and I read everything. Also when it comes to music I like most things. And during an evening at home there is some TV watching as well. I'm pretty weak to some of the series that run on TV at the moment, I must admit.

Just like many others in the Bernadotte family Princess Madeleine has an interest for art and design.
- And I really like to do something with my hands. It's soothing to get to be creative. I used to make jewellery before.

- But when it comes to the artistic, Victoria has always been very good and the family's star.

- But now we have a new star – Carl Philip who has taken wonderful photographs! So everyone else but me… but maybe it will come.

Princess Madeleine says that she instead likes to go skiing and be active.
- I like to do sports and move around.

And the last question – what the Princess thinks she will do within ten years – is the one she finds the most difficult.
- Hopefully I'm a mother but then and have achieved something very good, she says with a laughter.

And then she adds with a little more thought:
- And then I hope that I'm happy with life – happy with myself and what I have achieved.

Princess Madeleine, who has another time to catch, hurries off right away after the interview and while the photographers picks his gear together, another young girl walks in through the palace door. She has black jeans, a black coat and a big black briefcase under her arm. The dark brown shining hair is gathered in a simple knot in the neck.
- Hello, hello, she greets us cheerfully.

And despite that we're at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, it takes a little while before I get it: of course it's Crown Princess Victoria who attends the Diplomat Programme not at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs not far from the palace in the Old Town.

The sisters have missed each other by ten minutes.
